Well put! I think an important distinction needs to be made between AI, which powers everything from the YouTube algorithm to autocorrect, and generative AI, which should have stayed as a meme generator.
I wholeheartedly agree with Propositions 8 and 10, but sometimes the programmers themselves don’t understand the workings of their programs or the datasets they’ve used, making attribution or compensation difficult. I’m cautiously optimistic about this new copyright lawsuit! I’m sorry for going on so long. Thanks for another great newsletter!
Excellent ideas all around. Any AI prompt writer who brags about being an artist, yet doesn't know the first thing about perspective, chiaroscuro, color-theory or anatomy deserves to be called for being as phony as their simulacrum-bum art.
Thank you! And you’re exactly right. The term artist actually has a definition and requires work to own. I never considered myself a writer until I published my first work, not when I was just dabbling. And AI is mostly just that — dabbling. You have to do the work.
I like the idea of it being labeled / creators being open about using it. Tbh, the couple times i tried to use it to create a rendering for an image idea (single panel comic type thing) it couldn’t cut it. I suppose it will evolve, though.
Thanks for contributing to the conversation, Julia. I think all use of AI should be open for everyone to know about. The less we talk about it, the more it’ll invade areas we don’t even know about.
I am on #TeamHuman. I would prefer to work with an actual living artist to something done by a computer on the cheap.
Yes. Cheap work will only get cheap results.

Well thought out and reasonable take. Subscribed!
Hey Timothy! Thanks a bunch! I have three more video essays dropping this month so I hope they’re received well :)

Good that you’re generating discussion about it.
